Helena,
As I sat at your examination for confirmation and heard you share what you believe about the Bible, I was impressed. It is obvious that the Holy Spirit is working faith in your heart and you are willing to confess and trust in your Savior for the rest of your life. And so you promised as you were confirmed.
Your confirmation passage from 3 John shares the joy that the apostle John experienced as he mentioned that his readers walked in the truth. That is a wonderful goal for your life. You not only know the truth, you also have the truth in one location: the Bible.
Helena, you are going into a world where the “truth” is much different than the one you know and shared during your examination. To the world, there is no absolute truth. The result of this type of belief is eventually no ability to tell right from wrong. There is only what is right or wrong for each person. That can be a dangerous place in which to live.
The world’s truth also dismisses creation and the almighty power of God. Instead, this world and everything in it appeared by chance. As the billions of years continue to mount, humans improve and evolve to a higher state. Someday, Helena, someone will try to convince you that what you confess is simply superstition or an outdated view of reality.
The most dangerous of the world’s truths that is the belief that there are many ways to receive eternal life. The world would have you accept that the Bible can be understood in many ways. What you believe, Helena is fine for you. But to believe that you know the only way to heaven shows that you don’t care about those who believe differently.
Helena, the longer you are in this world the more the chances are that you will need to answer the question asked in the Garden of Eden, “Did God really say?” The devil loves to hear believers ask that question as they are trying to excuse their way into sin. “Did God really say I need to respect and obey my parents when I just know they are wrong?”
However, Helena, you can ask that question and still be walking in the truth as you go to the Bible to find the answer. Then you will know what to believe or do, or to say because you will know the real truth. The closer you stay to God and his Word, the stronger you will grow to continue to walk in His truth.
Helena, today you were confirmed and your grandmother and I are so proud of you. We praise our Heavenly Father for creating you. We thank the Holy Spirit for growing and preserving your faith. We pray your faith will continue as you feed it through regular contact with the Bible and communion. When you sin, know Jesus is there pursuing you to forgive that sin. That’s why he gave his life for you.
You know Helena that your Grandmother and I love you. You also know the truth that Jesus loves you more. Walk in that truth, Helena and you will never get lost.
This song shows us the way to stay living in the only truth.
